VA Medical Center Research Program Accredited
April 5, 2004
Iowa City, Iowa -- The VA Iowa City Health Care System is proud to announce that the National Committee for Quality Assurance ( NCQA) awarded a Certificate of Accreditation for the next three years to their Research Department for its Human Research Protection Programs.
" VA research is a national asset that benefits veteran patients and the entire nation by moving medical science forward," said John Cowdery, M.D., and the medical center's Acting Chief of Staff. " VA investigators played key roles in developing devices and techniques that revolutionized health care - such as the cardiac pacemaker, the CAT scan, and liver and kidney transplants. Today, VA is a leader in many areas of research, including AIDS, mental health, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, infectious diseases, and spinal cord injury."
VA conducts medical, rehabilitation, clinical, and health services research - as well as large, multi-center clinical trials - at more than 100 medical centers across the country, including the VA Iowa City Health Care System. VA Research Week, April 11-17, 2004, celebrates the achievements of VA researchers and the role they play in providing high quality care for veterans and advancing medical science. This year's theme is " VA Research: Serving Our Nation's Veterans."
