Iowa City, Iowa -- The VA Iowa City Health Care System announces that it has been awarded a "Center of Excellence" grant for Health Services Research. This grant is funded at a level of $700,000 per year for the next five years.

The title of the center is "Center for Research in the Implementation of Innovative Strategies in Practice ( CRIISP). The center will be part of an integrated program to,

  1. advance understanding of fundamental barriers and facilitators to the adoption of evidence-based practices;
  1. apply this understanding to develop, test and disseminate novel interventions to improve health care quality and costs in a variety of practice settings.

Dr. Gary Rosenthal, M.D., is the Director of this center of excellence and his Associate Director is Fred Wolinski, Ph.D.

" VA research is a national asset that benefits veteran patients and the entire nation by moving medical science forward," said John Cowdery,  M.D., the medical center's Acting Chief of Staff. " VA investigators played key roles in developing devices and techniques that revolutionized health care - such as the cardiac pacemaker, the CAT scan, and liver and kidney transplants. Today, VA is a leader in many areas of research, including AIDS, mental health, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, infectious diseases, and spinal cord injury."
